This is a crime thriller largely set in Glasgow, Scotland. Grant Cairns is a private investigator who is employed by an investigative journalist to look into a company called Caledonia data - CalDat - which she suspects is routing dark money to far-right groups, and also funding fake news. As Cairns pursues his leads, he is contacted by an old associate, ex-DS Amanda Pitt. Her former colleagues are trying to explain a murder where the perpetrator could not have known the victim, but who shouted right-wing slogans as he carried out his crime. Amanda has nothing in her life after being invalided out of Police Scotland, and she is fixated by this case. She enlists Cairns' help, and also help from a friend, Martin McGregor who knows a young white hacker who has interesting international links. Cairns reluctantly helps her, and then finds that her case links to hers. He becomes enmeshed in a world of fake news, where the consequences for its victims are life-changing.
